People buy a chain for one of two reasons: to wear it on its own, or to hang a favourite pendant on it. The second job needs a link that can carry the weight.

Links and what they suit

  • Cable — the most versatile, holds a pendant well
  • Rolo — round links, looks fuller at the same thickness
  • Curb — flat links, a stronger character, catches light nicely
  • Foxtail — dense and soft, drapes like a cord

Thickness and length

A small pendant needs only 0.8 to 1.2 mm. A heavier one wants at least 1.5 mm, otherwise the chain keeps twisting. A 40 cm chain ends above the neckline, 45 cm just below it, and 50 cm reaches the bustline.

Cable, rolo, curb and foxtail links. Thickness from 0.8 to 2.5 mm, lengths of 40, 45 and 50 cm. Sterling silver with gold plating.
