Choosing an engagement ring comes down to three decisions: the stone, the gold colour and the size. The last one is the easiest to get wrong safely, because size can be altered after the proposal.

The stone

A diamond is the most classic and returns the most light. Sapphire, ruby and emerald come in where you want colour and something less expected. A coloured stone is often cheaper at the same size of setting.

Gold colour

White gold emphasises the whiteness of a diamond and reads cool. Yellow is the traditional pick. Rose suits fairer skin and stones in warm tones.

Finding her size without asking

Take a ring she wears on that finger and measure its inner diameter, or trace the inside on paper. When in doubt choose the larger size, since narrowing a shank is simpler than stretching one.
