Gold-plated silver is the compromise that works for most people: the colour of gold at a price closer to silver. The one thing worth knowing is how to handle it, because here gold is a layer, not the material.
How long the plating lasts
Mostly it depends on how you wear the piece. Earrings and necklaces, which meet little friction, hold up for years. Rings and bracelets wear faster because they rub against something constantly. Contact with chlorine, cosmetics and sweat speeds up the wear most of all.
Rules that extend the life of plating
- put jewellery on last, after cream and perfume
- take it off before showers, pools and sport
- store it dry, each piece separately
- wipe with a soft cloth, never an abrasive paste
When to choose something else
If you want a ring for daily wear that never comes off, consider solid 585 gold. If you prefer a cool colour, look at the platinum-plated versions.
